How to Make a Zombie Cocktail

cocktails with gin recipe

Donn Beach created the Zombie drink in the 1930s. To help a customer at a business meeting, he created the drink. The drink was made using dark rum, fruit liqueurs and other ingredients. The drink was served in a glass with a maraschino cherry garnish.

It is a popular Tiki beverage and there are many variations. Some versions contain 151-proof rum and others use light rum as a base. There are many other variations including fruit juices, passionfruit syrup, and others. It's served over ice with a cherry garnish.

Vic Bergeron claimed to have invented the Zombie Drink, but he was in fact a rival of Donn Beachcomber. Both men were involved with the Tiki craze. Berry, who was notoriously sceptical about his cocktail recipes discovered the original Zombie recipe in an old Beachcomber employee's book. Sippin’ Safari, the book that was published, was based upon a notebook Dick Santiago (a former waiter at Don the Beachcombers) kept. Jeff Berry, a tiki revivalist and later discovered the book. He used the book to reconstruct the recipe.

The cocktail comes in a highball flute. The drink includes three types, as well grenadine syrup, passion fruit syrup, as well fruit juices. It is served with a cherry garnish. The cocktail can be served over ice or in Tiki style.

Donn Beach created it in the 1930s. Bacardi 151 Rum, pineapple juice, lime, simple syrup, and simple syrup were the original ingredients. This drink gained popularity at 1939 New York World's Fair. The classic recipe is not the only one available. There are variations that include higher-proof rums and greater quantities of fruits.

This drink is strong and tropical. It can be made with 151-proof rum, light rum, or dark rum. You can also make the cocktail with bottled papaya. The drink can be served with ice or with crushed ice. You can serve it in a Zombie or highball glass. Applebee's Neighborhood Drink Menu offers the Zombie. It is $1 for October.

Donn Beach is believed to have altered the recipe numerous times. He served the cocktail in a hole in his Hollywood restaurant's wall in the 1930s. To keep competitors away, this was done. This strategy didn't work and the recipe turned into a bland syrup-laden mess. Beachbum Berry came across Donn’s original recipe in 2005. He incorporated it into the book he was writing. The chapter on this drink is found in Sippin’ safari. Berry also met ex-Beachcomber employees. He uncovered the recipe in a notebook written by Santiago, and he discovered Don's code numbers, which correspond to the bottles used in the restaurant.
